Fabulous World Of Tom Clark
Thomas F. Clark is the lead artist for Cairn Studio, Ltd. He is the most well-known artist in America today, world renowned for his charming clay sculptures, he is the most prolific and talented sculptor in the figurine industry. He creates a wide variety of statues, from imaginative Gnomes and Woodspirits, to various renditions of people from all walks of life, including Great People in History. The irresistibly human expressions of his Woodspirits, Mountaineers, and Seafaring Characters have captured the fancy of collectors though-out the United States, Canada, and Europe, Asia (especially Japan!). Dr. Clark and Cairn Studio have been commissioned to create artworks for a wide variety of businesses and organizations, including The Easter Seal Society, various NASCAR drivers, Lance Corporation, The Boy Scouts of America, The Cub Scouts of America, The National Shriners and Mason Charities, Xerox Corporation, Hospice, QVC, Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, We're Hear For You, Michigan State, and many, many others.
A theology professor at prestigious Davidson College, Tom Clark retired from his teaching position to begin sculpting his trademark Gnomes. In this predominantly postmodern era, where novels shy away from linear plots; poetry commonly dismisses rhyme, structure, and reason; and art often lacks a resemblance to anything other than itself, Clark s work is not celebrated in the pages of The New Yorker or mentioned in the privy artistic circles in the Village and Soho. It is celebrated in what some would call a far more worthy arena--the popular human spirit. Clark has created approximately 1,000 unique artworks in his Davidson, North Carolina studio, which then are reproduced for collectors in a Mooresville facility. With over 3 million collectors and 3,000 distributors, Clark is known worldwide for his wide spectrum of work, which ranges from whimsical Gnomes and Woodspirits to his exalted bronze renditions of King David, Lincoln, and Beethoven. His creations reflect the extensive training in both theology and portraiture. "I try and present each statue with a dignity that comes from a life of worth," "My foke heroes show concern for their fellow-man, a sense of duty and an inner peace."
He endows his Woodspirits with not only a mood, but a whole personal history as well. Often coins are incorporated into the sculpture as symbols of the character's "heritage." His enthusiasm for his "family", doesn't stop with their sculpting. To share his stories and demonstrate his art, He spends 40 weekends with his collectors, traveling store to store around the country. The most valuable item in my collection, which is priceless to me, is a picture of Tom and myself at one his art shows in New Jersey, 16 years ago.
If you're looking for a mystical place to take a date after a movie, you'll find few places as enchanting as the windows of the Thomas Clark Museum on 131 North Main Street, and see a living history of his Creations, Call 704-892-9213, to find out visiting hours. As it approaches midnight, and if it is meant to be, then you may catch one of the Gnomes or Woodspirits winking at you, as the hallmark of Clark's art is that it is always on the verge of coming to life. From Jefferson to Beethoven to King David to the famous NASCAR drivers to his trademark Gnomes, Clark s sculptures provide the mirror that all higher art affords--the mirror within which we see the eternal aspects of our deeper selves reflected.
